UHS Culinary Arts Academy…Training the Generation of Chefs!

Culinary Arts Academy Overview:

The purpose of the Culinary Arts Academy is create an appreciation for all things food and drink by spreading knowledge about food through teaching and exploring the different aspects of Culinary Arts.  To inspire others to achieve their culinary dreams and to be involved in our community by participating in school related activities (football concessions, team meals, appreciation/awards banquets, night school meals, special school events) offsite caterings (weddings) and many large community events (Umatilla Museum BBQ, Lady of the Lakes Renaissance Faire, and the Mt Dora Blueberry Festival).

The goal of our Culinary Arts Academy is to improve the future careers of all students.  Culinary students will have an opportunity to learn solid business habits, practice the soft skills of interpersonal communication, exposure to profit driven accounting, and gain valuable real world entrepreneurship experiences that will benefit them post-graduation in technical education, college and throughout their future careers with the life skills they learn in Culinary Arts.

The operational mission is for Culinary Arts students to successfully run the Bulldog Bistro, create, prepare and market unique products, explore food science as well as cater on and off campus banquets and special events.  We do these activities to exceed the learning standards of the District and the State of Florida, to provide the best possible dining experiences for the UHS Community, to fund student trips and learning opportunities, and to maintain and expand our kitchen and dining facility.

Culinary students not only practice food safety and sanitation; but also, are tested on their knowledge with two industry certification exams.  ServSafe and National Registry. Both exams are Manager exams and recognized in the industry, valid for 5 years.  One exam focuses on the Food Safety Protection and the other Food Safety, with real life experiences.  If the student receives two industry certifications, they earn the CAPE Gold Seal Scholarship upon successful high school graduation!
